LO Peachi ere again! Here's a link to another lovely wobbly deep downtempo dubstep mix from MiHKAL. Very much in the same vein as his amazingly beautiful Snuglife mix, previously on this blog here. This one is like a big bass blanket to wrap around you in these cold days of winter issintit! Some great tracks from Mimosa, Gladkill, Love & Light and a nice remix of an Emancipator track. Enjoy!

And almost more importantly here's another EPICALLY AWWGSUM MIX of a MiHKAL live set at RE:CREATiON- this is a beautiful mix full of lovely PHAT wobbling grinding and bumping bass resonating around with layers upon layers of lovely sounds to tantalise and titilate your taste buds! Starts pretty mellow but then heads a bit more up-tempo and then goes through the roof, but still all with a lovely undercurrent of wompy bass. MMmmmm tasty! Then it mellows out again and finishes with a beautiful track by Gladkill - just stunningly emotional! Great mix essentially! Pour this into your ears and all over YOUR FACE RIGHT NOW!!! Can't believe it's free!!! salsa impressionante!!

LO Peachi ear: Just a quicky to post a new mix from your's truly. First time back after a while and, well the best thing I can say about the mixing is that there aren't many of them and they are over quickly! I am not pretending to be a great DJ, I just enjoy it. So getting over quickly leaves plenty of quality time for what is hopefully a nice selection of bumpy funky dub-steppy tracks. Nice and light and uplifting to listen to - well that's the aim; it cheers me up anyway! I hope it's infectious. The title is a dedication to a good friend of mine who I hope rebounds and finds her radiance again. She deserves it ;-)

UK Glitch Hop January round-up

2012 has kicked off to a strong start for UK Glitch. Here's what I've gorged myself on this month

The Tunes
Mouldy Soul's released yet another kwality EP, this time through BroKen Records

The man with the stagnant spirit has also reworked Hedflux and Neurodriver's psy breaks banger Energy Vibration into an off-kilter mechanical squelch-fest for the Broken Robot remix competition.

The last I heard from KURSA was dubstep tune that showed a lot of potential but was a bit too jump up. Further investigation reveals that the man actually has more funk than that. Bonnibelle is a badass mid-tempo lazer bass blaster to be released very soon through those purveyors of quality free music from the psychedelic underground, Wonkay Records. Grab the Hackney test track below, while you wait.

Hiding away down in deepest darkest Brizzzzol have been The Beat Dweebs, who profess to making music that makes you go 'Uuuuuhhh...' S'gotta hella lotta funk. Works for me.

Pistol Shrimp's got an EP coming out on Prime DUB and it's all about this track. It's like Bobby Tank having a bubble bath with Koan Sound. Love it.

Following hot on the heels of Mouldy Soul's Shimi Sonic remix last month, Dephicit's previewed this nice little number out soon on Riddim Fruit:

On the even more off-kilter Brainfeeder style side of things, Illum Sphere from Manchester gets airtime from a lot of Low End Theory residents. This went up on his Soundcloud just before the New Year, with a release expected soon

New one for me this month, downtempo glitch schizznit from Drowzy Beats in Brighton. This is exactly what you need to put on after a hectic day at work. Kick back and enjoy!

And lastly some guy called Rat posted this to the UK Glitch Hop Facebook page, which sounds kinda nice.

The mixtapes
My find for the month has been Jae Nimbus. I went to Elixir of Life for NYE, but had enough if the party after Slackbaba and Shpongle. I wished I stayed becuase two days later Nimbus posted this mix onto UK Glitch Hop. Mostly self produced tunes, it bodes very well for his first release through Broken Records. Keep an eye out for him playing in Brighton and further afield. Even better, book him to play your party!

Automaton's uploaded this DJ set from Beta Birmingham's Anty Riot Squad album launch party on 22nd December 2011 @ The End, Birmingham. Got lots of big classic tunes in there along with some heavy fresh ones.

Hey Peachi ear! Just a quicky to hook you guys up to this lovely squelch-fest of a mix from Rama OOOD. Or as his mum knows him "Ramsay Melhuish" - who claims to be part of the UK psychadelic trance furniture as an original member of the trance production team of OOOD that's been going since 1994 issit! Well we don't really do psy-trance on this blog so I'll take his word for it, and probably the closest we get is Hedflux style psy-tech-funk, which has a few psy-tranc'esque licks to it - but non of that torturously dull 4/4 drum beat bass. Basslines can be fun and varied guys!! Anyway check out this free download from Rama OOOD as its just a lovely mellow voyage through a pulsating and flowing world of sqishy wibbly bass that'll wobble your chops off if you don't watch out.... apparently!

I actually found it hanging out next to Mouldy Soul on a soundcloud search for more hypersquelch and I can see why! If you haven't listened to Mouldy Soul and you like this kinda stuff then check out their new EP Hypersquelch - I particularly like Yippee Cheese Face - great name, great track! Bought it and gonna keep it... so ner!

Parker
Another Ghetto Funk affiliate and he of 'Where's my Monkey' notoriety. Parker opened and closed 2011 with top notch mixtapes and has upheld a track record of solid releases throughout, both as one part of the Beekeepers and with his own remixes. I love his variety, samples and ability to move between styles - glitch hop, ghetto funk, d'n'b, dubsstep, electro swing. Plus he's a lovely guy and played a banging set for the handful people that were there to see him in Guildford earlier in the year!

Bassnectar
Because I'm sick of everyone crediting Skrillex for creating the dubstep scene in the US. Bassnectar has done more than anybody to promote bass music stateside and he deserves all the props he can get. Plus his first UK shows for 7 years at Fabric and Secret Garden Partys were off the scale! I wasn't the biggest fan of Divergent Spectrum, but this free remix EP is badass

Spinforth
In the last few years Soundcloud has become the de facto tool for marketing and discovering new music to audiophiles. One half on Hong Kong Ping Pong, DJ Spinforth deserves a knighthood for his weekly Soundcloud Scour at Ghetto Funk, which he's been persistently updating since the start of the year, each edition complete with a hilarous comedy photo. Too good to be free: Archnemisis, Nastynasty & Thriftworks

I'm not sure what's sparked it, but in the last year so there have been a slew of seriously good albums and EPs offered for free download via Bandcamp. Here's three recent releases from the US that are too good to be free...

First up Archnemesis, who share a label (1320 Records) with Nalepa, Prefuse 73, Virual Boy, Knowa Knowone and Eskmo. They're a new discovery for me, thanks to the brilliant Sample this Music blog. Reminiscent of Pretty Lights,who gives his music away for free too, it sounds like they've done a lot of organic sampling to get that really listenable, feel good, 'real music' vibe. People's Radio is music that's worth paying for, but you can download it for free here.

Nastynasty has a well established habit of giving away his best tunes for nothing. The Memorabilia EP is a good taster of the range of his sounds, from floaty subs to bubbling bass and off kilter funk, often lifted with deliciously soulful vocals.

I first came across Thriftworks on An-ten-nae's Acid Crunk vol.3, but this whole free album, the seond he's given away, is very much more on the downtempo side of the whomp fence. Lovingly produced, delicate and painfully beautiful, it's got an atmospheric desert-city-under-the-stars feel to it. Magical.

Mary Tale - Empress Relentless (Mary Melt) Mix

Hi all, Peachi ahoy after a long absence - forgive me. I guess I just haven't been listening to much new music recently apart from chasing up Morbjits MM updates. He's gona all glitch hop though, so I think its time to get back to some heavy tech funk breaks and who better to kick things of with than a favourite of the MM blog Mary Tale (artist formerly known as Mary Miss Fairy and treasured Ra-family member). Tis another belter from her with the kind of epic build-ups and drops remiscent of her legendary Paris Burners - Moulan Rouge set, [made it into Morbjits top three for 2011] - that set nearly took the roof off and fried a few onion garlands and burnt the bagettes!! [to be slightly racialistical - forgive me Monsieur Polo OohlaRa]

Before reveiwing Mary Tale's new mix, just a heads up to some SOPA and PIPA goings-on in the USA, to do with piracy and copyright infringment and freedom of the internet, that might seriously affect the whole internet by closing down sites like this. And I don't mean just this blog, but the host company for this site and any other media sharing sites, like: youtube, wikipedia and wordpress. To find out why check out this TED video that explains how they may become liable for user copyright infringments and managing that may become prohibitive. Then get informed and then get active, If you're from the US then get intouch with your government representative, if your not an Amerkan (mmmgay) then hassle your Amerkan friends to do so. It seems this bill wont pass, but a similar one may do soon, so stay informed and get active where necessary. Cheers!

I particularly like the first third as there as some really good build up tracks that drop into some massive drops. Mary has a great ear for tracks that do this and this makes listening to her set really high energy because you're on a roller coaster ride the whole way through. Although it seems to go a bit happy hardcore at around 13mins for a bit, it bounces back with some real brain melters in the mid section too. Very hard to describe the high energy tracks in there, but the best compliment I can give Mary's mixes is that I save them for special occassions and I have to be full on to listen to them. Not for the faint of heart and beware yee who wander across the mix half arsed, cause you will be dominated by the fembots of hard bass!! Which reminds me that I loved the tagline that comes with this mix:
"Like being beaten up by dominatrix robots whilst watching cute as a button anime characters Carlton dance for you...essentially"
- obvious innit, once you've listened to it!! I wasn't so sure about the drum and bass dessert at the end from about 47mins onwards but it wasn't too bad and you know, by now, she can do what she wants as you kneel before the Temple of the Empress Relentless taking it like the bass slut you are.... ehem... cough cough... OK, maybe that's just me then! ;-)

So Mary didn't make it freely donwloadeable on Soundcloud, sort of by mistake, but she said its OK for you to get your versions of the full mix via this blog. So here's the link and ENJOY!

While Tipper's mid-tempo wobble has dominated the glitch hop charts at Addictech this year, the best UK Glitch Hop release for me has been ZDS's Cyber Dojo Lazer Training. Here's a trio of UK producers who took the US by storm with their live show on their autumn tour. They've been locked away writing over Christmas so I'm expecting big things for 2012.

Koan Sound - Funk Blaster EP (OWSLA)
These Bristolians have been releasing bass for a while now, but their debut on Skrillex's label took me completely by surprise when I heard Funk Blaster on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show. The Max Out EP was good, but this sounded like nothing else on the radio... until Doctor P and Flux Pavilion release Superbad! There seems to be quite a trend for this kind of funked-up not-dubstep at the moment for which I'm wholly in favour. Check out Must Be The Feeling on Nero's album, DCarls All In (see below) plus Bobby Tank's Vanquish EP for more in this direction. I think this just about qualifies as 2011. Deekline & Ed Solo's Hot Cakes series has been a non-stop hit factory of classic d'n'b / breaks remixes for the last few years and I've been giving this double A side with Stickybuds heavy rotation all year. D'n'B versions of Aloe Blacc's Need a Dollar and Adle's Rolling in the Deep also worth checking out.

I seem to remember this coming out in 2010, but since I Need a Dollar didn't get a UK release until 2011 and I've been playing it every chance I get, I'm including it here. This is Jpod at his bouncy, soulful remixing best. Later in the year the EMS EP with the Root Sellers on vocals was brilliant laid back mid tempo glitch hop and he's just released his first debut album Halfsteppin through his own Swing Set Sounds label. In a much apprecited gesture, you can buy FLAC, wav and MP3 all for one price directly from the label. You can also get instrument tools to cook up your own sounds on Ableton. Brilliant.

ill-esha makes lush music and Reverie is such a beautiful laid-back bass album. I usually reach for it after a party, but it's also perfect in headphones on a nice day. Has had one of the longest rotations on my mp3 player this year.

2011's been an epic year for this duo from Reno, Nevada, with two EPs on Simplify followed by an awesome collaboration with Stephan Jacobs and their first album in the autumn. Their set that I caught on the Temple of Boom at Burning Man was amazing.

After the promise of 2010, 2011 has been an amazing year for Stephan Jacobs with the Mad Era and In the Vortex EPs plus brilliant collaborations with NiT GRiT, Ben Samples, Love and Light and +Verb. The set I caught at Burning Man for Dub Scouts completely absorbed me. Check out his recent memekast for a taste of how good he is. This Benny Benassi gets my Jacobs tune of the year award though, with Pizza Party's Don't Stop (below) a close second.

Your Niece / Bassnectar, The Collysilium, Secret Garden Party, UK
The Collysilium and the Bearded Kitten scaled up big time at this year's Secret Garden Party. The hay bale amphitheatre was about twice as big as last year. During the day it played host to mud wrestling and all manner of silliness, then at night it turned into the best dancefloor on site. Headlining the Saturday night was none other than US bass music pioneer Bassnectar himself, his first UK festival appearance in 5 years. On just before him was Your Niece, who's been pioneering West Coast crunk on these shores since before everyone else cottoned on, up for his biggest support set to date. He certainly didn't disappoint. Together they delivered well over two hours off unadulterated bass pleasure while the Collysilium went completely nuts. Amazing.

Purely because it was one of those beautiful moments where so much comes together, though, my favourite set at Burning Man 2011 has to be Lee Burridge on the Robot Heart at dawn on Saturday morning. Beautiful, minimal blissed out, groovy music in a truly amazing place with truly wonderful people.

Review: The Glitch Mob at Spectrum Bass Bomber, Electric Brixton, 5 November 2011

Comprising three of the most talented early innovators of West Coast glitch hop - Ed Ma (edIT), Josh Mayer (Ooah / Of Porcelin / PANTyRAiD) and Justin Boreta (NastyWays / Slidecamp) - The Glitch Mob have done for their music in the US what Benga and Skream have achieved for dubstep in the UK.

The timeline is fairly similar too. edIT's first release on Planet Mu in 2004, Crying Over Pros For No Reason, is one of the earliest examples of the genre that now not only saturates the West Coast of Canada and America, but has followers across Europe, Australia, South Africa and beyond.

2007 was probably the year that saw the scene begin to consolidate itself, with a second album from edIT, a classic release from Bassnectar, glitch compilations on Muti Music and Interchill, and the first tunes from Ooah and Boreta. In the Bay Area and LA, edIT, Ooah, Boreta and co-founder Kraddy found themselves touring together to promote their sound.

A string of genre-defining remixes as The Glitch Mob followed, freely shared through their website, and collated in 2009's Crush Mode mixtape. The music had all the bounce of the most beat focused hip-hop, all the bombast of rock, and a tendency towards the epic, layered with g-funk synths and guitar crunches. Last year the departure of Kraddy foreshadowed the release of the collective's first self penned album, Drink the Sea.

The album marked a change. It was geared towards live shows rather than record bags, with pounding drums and a stadium feel. As a DJ, I was disappointed an found many of the tracks to be too similar, but Drink the Sea is loved by many and found the Mob a lot of new fans. Although I couldn't make it to their UK album launch at Koko and January 2011 tour, I heard reports of the live show: three guys fiddling with laptops, that didn't fulfill the promise of the epic music.

Which brings us to Spectrum's Bass Bomber at Electric Brixton last night, the second UK date on an epic European Tour for the Mob.

When we arrived, Pete Jordan was playing a banging bass set that just about covered all bases imaginable. In front of him sat three sets of Ableton controllers, touch screens and electric drums, all controls facing towards the audience. Where they going to be turned around? They surely wouldn't play with their backs to us?

As the edIT led the Mob onstage, black shirts, white ties, in a cloud of smoke, crowd chanting, the trio leaned over from behind their kit, still facing the audience, to begin sequencing and playing touch-pad synths and effects in full view. This was going to be a live show.

With the "put your hands in the air" sample of the opening track, things had the instant feeling of a stadium rock concert. As hundreds of live hand claps began to punctuate the beats, I couldn't help but feel a tingle up my spine.

While some might question the virtuosity of playing patterns on pre-programmed touch pads, tracks like 'Fortune Days' soon began to really show off edIT and Oaah's deft finger-work, trained through years of vinyl teasing. Meanwhile Boreta was a quiet presence on the left, like the rhythm guitarist of the group, constantly cuing and tweaking. The drums got a frequent battering from all three, adding a strong dynamic to their movement on stage.

The stand out tracks were the classic remixes 'Red Dress On', 'Monday' and 'West Coast Rocks', which really got the whole place popping like it was New Year's Eve. It also gradually became apparent that the 'same sounding' feel of the album tracks actually held the live set together as a thematic progression.

The set culminated in an encore opening with the suitably epic 'Drive it like you stole it' and it was another cover, The White Stripes 'Seven Nation Army' dedicated to all the "filthy fucking bass lovers out there" that wrapped things up in triumphant style, to a sea of arm, people sitting on each others shoulders and double-time clapping. The Mob's sound is so warm and all encompassing that I don't think anyone really wanted it to end.

On the basis of last night's performance, The Glitch Mob have successful overcome any criticisms leveled at their live show and are all set to be the melodic stadium-rock pin-ups of the glitch-hop world. The real strength of their achievement for me, though, is that unlike Magnetic Man they've managed to do this without compromising an almost entirely instrumental sound.

Having finally understood the context of the Drink the Sea, I'm now looking forward to seeing where they go with the next album.

UK Glitch Hop rocks

So, following a 2011 UK tour from Bassnectar (the first in 7 years), The Glitch Mob also return to the UK this weekend. With dubstep getting ever more US sounding (Flux Pavillion, Doctor P), a jaw dropping EP from Zen Death Squad this summer (pictured above) and an amazing forthcoming tune from Koan Sound on Zane Lowe's playlist this week, the time feels ripe for UK Glitch Hop to blow up in 2012.

On this tip I've started a UK Glitch Hop Facebook page to help you keep track of events and releases, as well as keeping everyone else posted with what you're up to (Like Like Like). According to Facebook there's over 30,000 of us in the UK who like US glitch hop acts, so lets get behind our home-grown talent as well. They fucking bounce! Review: Burning Man 2011 - Rites of Passage

After yearning to to check out the West Coast bass music scene since 2007, this year, with clearance from work and a willingness to plunder my savings, I finally made it to Burning Man with D-ra.The theme was Rites of Passage and this certainly was a pilgrimage for me.

Burning Man takes planning. This is a desert festival based on radical self reliance in a currency free environment, not an English country garden with overpriced food stalls and potable water on tap. For more details check out the survival guide.

Getting to Black Rock City is all part of the experience. Stories of broken down RVs and hours spent waiting for a lift from Reno are common. We flew out to San Francisco and found an eco-bus traveling from Santa Rosa (using this brilliant new ride-share site) so had a fairly easy ride of it - until at about 10pm Sunday night we hit the most epic queue of tail lights you've ever seen. Even so, were one of the earliest to arrive on site and it was quite an experience to feel the city fill up around us.

Our base for the week was with the Pink Heart at the prima-playa real estate of 9.30 Esplanade. We couldn't have chosen a nicer camp to stay in or a better way to connect with others on the playa. As well as providing shelter from the sun and pink fluffy sofas for tired limbs, we were giving out Coconut Bliss ice cream and ice cold cucumber water to all who came.

Black Rock City (click on map above) is vast and full of distractions. The best analogy I can think of in terms of size is Glastonbury Festival, where it takes hours to get between stages. It's nothing like the muddy crush of densely packed bodies bogged down in drizzle though. With a vast open space between the two sides of the city and day-time temperatures of up to 50 C, it's the complete opposite.

The best piece of advice anyone gave me before we went is to get a bike. Without one you're either gonna spend your days trekking epic distances on foot or remain slave to the whims of mutant vehicle drivers as they meander across the playa at random. We had ours actually delivered to the Playa by the guys at Re-Cycle.

The other way to travel in style is to catch rides on mutant vehicles. These DIY art projects bring the mad max flavour to the festival and for me were one of the real creative highlights of the week Many take nautical or animal themes, but there's all kinds of craziness out there. You often only glimpse them emerging from dust clouds or far in the distance, somewhere out there on the borders of mirage and reality. At night they're lit up with EL wire and fairy lights, as are all the bikes and people (you don't wanna be a dark-wad and get run over).

After a day of settling in, we kicked off the party on Tutu Tuesday at Distrikt with M.A.N.D.Y. and Lee Combs. It's all about Distrikt for the daytime party. Set deep in the suburbs of 9 and Funeral, the system fires up at about 11am when it's got too hot for anyone in a tent to sleep anyway. This is the Ibiza beach party of the playa, albeit with a more steampunk disco feel. It reminds me of the daytime Origin Stage at Glade or Funky Beach at Boom - good time vibes, beautiful, semi-clothed people and pumping progressive house building into tech funk as the dusk draws in.

My favourite moment came later in the week when a group of Santas and their elves started to infiltrate the crowd around the rig. Before we knew it the dance-floor was being pelted with snowballs.

Later that evening the city came to life. With sound the main sound camps still pretty muted, we decided to jump on the first art car that came our way and ended up all the way out on Liminal at the edges of the city for a game of glo-frisbee. A few more cars took us via a few artworks to the Man, the Temple - a most beautiful, peaceful building that would look quite at home in the Alhambra - and eventually across to the purple geodesic shapes of Disorient at 2 o'clock and Esplanade.

I'd been told that one of the best places to see the sun come up is the legendary R obot Heart, a colossal mobile rig on the back of a truck, which we found somewhere out past the temple playing deep house and funky progressive techno.

By Wednesday I'd managed to find someone with a music line-up (thanks to the RockStarLibrarian) to scour for set times. One of the first must sees on my list was Stephan Jacobs, who I caught at Dub Scouts that night. It was like heaven to finally be submersed in some proper interesting bass and his set was right on point. Stephan is by far one of my favourite producers at the moment and has just dropped this sweet new EP on Simplify.

Next up was Sugarpill at Basscamp's Temple of Boom, on the corner of 10 and Esplanade, surrounded by glowing mutant vehicles an open to lasers stretching across the playa from other stages. I've been aware Sugarpill via our blogs for about 3 years, watching him progress to become a very exciting producer, so it was a great pleasure to see him play such a good set.

Sugarpill was followed by another of my 'must sees', local lads Love and Light from Reno. Alongside Opiuo these guys have been behind a funkier, squelchier bouncing glitch-hop in the last two years and their set really carried that energy, with girls and guys that had previously been lost in their own bassheads dancing together with the funk.

ill.gates kept the tempo up, bringing in some more ragga stylings and varied beats. Going for some kinda playa record, this animal played over 30 times throughout the week, visiting just about every sound camp, so I dipped in and out quite a few of his sets which between them covered just about every kind of bass music. A true innovator, he's just dropped his first full length album since 2008, The ill.Methodology.

I was woken up by some friends Thursday afternoon and headed back to Distrikt via a mojito bar built above an old school bus. On the way back we found the notorious snack food glory hole and thankfully avoided any complimentary cock.

Thursday night was Muti Music showcase at The Do Lab's Fractal Nation Village over at 2 and Graduation. The combination of Muti Music's Clipping Paths compilation and Fractal Nation's art dome coming to Boom and Glade in 2007/2008 are what led me towards a love of the West Coast bass scene in the first place. Now I was finally here!

After the Burning Man regional effigies around the man were burnt I headed over via a Beats Antique DJ set at HookahDome (more on them later), arriving in time to catch Heyoka perfectly setting the scene with some squelchy psychedila, whilst I caught up with my fire dancer friends at the back.

It was Mimosa that I was really itching to see though and I made my way to the front. He's been a favourite for a long time and his 2009 Burning Man mix had a hell of a lot to live up to. Thankfully he delivered. The set co-incided with a pyronaughts fire-show on The Do Lab stage, which really picked up the atmosphere, even if the people standing gawping with their mouths open did kinda dampened the dancing. It was going off on front of the DJ booth as Tigran played a set that spanned more club style hip hop remixes, classic Mimosa, some amazing tune with steel drums, and the newer d'n'b dubstep of the likes of Block Party. I got totally lost in it.

Tigran was followed by label boss Dov who played another wicked set through the full Muti Music repertoire of glitch-hop, dubstep and drumstep. We left while Freq Nasty was blowing the roof off with his own flavour of energetic dubstep.

Friday night a giant Trojan horse was dragged out into the middle of the playa by volunteer slaves. Gradually all the art cars parked up around it, sound systems blasting, jetting fire and spilling people to create the atmosphere of a mad max cruise cum space age carnival

It seemed like most of the crowd joined me in heading to the Fractal Nation Village again to see Beats Antique playing their full live set. This is quite the playa event. The place was so packed that I decided to hang out behind the mixing desk where there was space to dance with all the sound quality afforded to the legendary Monkey King at the controls. As a result I didn't see much of Zoe Jakes bellydancing, but the tunes were good and we had a loads fun.

Not interested in David Starfire ("he was just a wanker anyway", reports our Musical Mana correspondent) we split over to the Hookahdome to catch the end of Dulce Vita's dubstep set and to see Knowa Knowone, another target on the list. Due to some kinda tech issue that prevented clean switch-overs the crowd had completely disappeared by the start of Knowa's set. As he eased us into his glitched out percussive beats more and more people drifted toward the torchlight patch of dust, until by the end a very happy crowd were popping and swaying to Knowa's conscious sounds. Someone very kindly lent me some fire poi for my only voluntary spin of the week, finishing just as the technical hitch kicked in again. I went to have a chat to Knowa afterwards and he's a real lovely guy. Did you know he was at Secret Garden Party last year? Neither did I, but I hope he comes back!

After riding and dancing on a few art cars that were cruising up and down the strip at 2, we set off on foot into the deep playa for sunrise. Halfway across we found a Hawain hog roast BBQ going on!

I made it to Robot Heart just after sun-up to find a load of our mates for a magical morning in the hands of Lee Burridge. Sunshine out grooves, beautiful smiling people, girls in cages dangling off a crane, crazy art cars, amazing outfits and plenty of booty shakin'.

After dancing our fill we retired to the bar at Nexus, where Treavor Moontribe was playing some funky and floaty Opiuo laden glitch-hop. I think I reached the point where I was to drunk to stand, or climb the dome, around the time Nanda came on.

We didn't wake till Sat eve - just in time to rock the conclave with the Fireworks Collective before the man burnt. Hungover and drained, we went back to bed straight after, not waking up till just before dawn to see the sun come up from the temple. After exploring some art as far out as we could walk, we went back to pack up camp before watching the temple burn.

This review doesn't even come close to capturing the crazy scale of everything that happens at Burning Man. If you've not been yet, just do it and don't worry too much about catching all the DJ's you wanna see (I never got to see Opiuo, Samples, Sub Swara, Guttstar, Gladkill, Chris B, Mikhal and many more). Just go with the flow and don't get stuck on the sound camps. Make sure you make the time to explore all the art properly and to bimble through the weird and wonderful world of the suburbs - that's where the experience really lies.

Review: Wonk#ay Records - VA - Shaken

Based in Brighton and London, Wonkay Records pride themselves on a philosophy of free access - from rawkus parties to their ear pummeling brand of night time and progressive psytrance downloads.

This is the label's second compilation of more downtempo and dubstep flavoured tracks (download WONK#OUT vol.1 here) and I'm really loving the graphics by JOEK.

REVIEW:

1. Hermit - Pontain
Surprisingly for Wonkay we're eased in with tranquil flutes and the sound of running water. More Chilled Buddha Vol.78 than Headfuck Bleeps vol.2, but there's a rumble of boneshaking bass lingering there underneath the shuffling percussion. A nice chilled basscape.

2. Duskky - Say You
A seemingly unrelated sample of 'One man went to mow' precedes a menacing bass and rimshot delay intro. It builds around a soulful trip-hop vocal into a slow stomping atmospheric downtempo-breakcore track, laced with static infused piano samples. The track holds tension throughout - one for a pensive mood, albeit with a positive vocal message. "You can be what you wanna be" innit

3. ZenDeathSquad vs Roger - Superman Remix
If you're gonna sample Roger Trout's talk box vocals you can't really fail to bring on the funk. This is classic gfunk-infused glitch-hop with whomping lazer basslines. West Coast sounds from London baby. I hadn't come across these guys before, but I'll be keeping an eye on them from now! 4. Bunkle - Curly Fries
Label boss Bunkle weighs in with an industrial stagger, sounding like a drunk production line with a nervous tic, or Ministry trying their hand at dubstep. I'd suggest downloading a full set from this man to get the bigger picture.

5. Kursa - Nanocluster (DEMO)
Despite a promising intro and some good jump up energy going in, I find myself a bit dissapointed by this one. The bass sounds a little too generic in that angry sawing dubstep mode and I don't feel like it really gets anywhere past the first minute and a half. On the other hand, if this was dropped live I can totally see it getting the room bouncing. With some development it could become a stonker.

6. Coda - Pablo
Coda are a live dub / dubstep band who've been breaking up the monotony of this DJ heavy arena for sometime. Upbeat and refreshing two-step breakbeat, swirling synths and bright trombone dropping into an oscillating bassline, dubwise samples and guitar chops with mesmeric ease. It's far too short - gimmie more!

7. Scamp - Frequency
Scattergun drum patterns bubbling with menacing squelches morphing into a slogging elasticated kick drum snare with eirie nightime harmonics underneath. My girlfriend thinks this sounds like robots farting whilst having sex underwater. With samples like "What the fuck are those noises?" this is like a down-tempo mirror for the Dark psy sounds of Wonkay's full on dancefloors releases.

LO Peachi here - Hey hey, been a while and welcome to the end of the summer wind down. Good to see C-Ra last night and reminded me I used to write for a music blog... cobwebs off, here we go!

Top musical highlight for me this summer was checking out Slamboree at Shambala. Although I think SGP is by far the better festival on all fronts, Shambala did serve up this little gem. Pumping dubstep with live acoustics and a crazy amount of circus style things on stage. I did have the pleasure of camping next to them and hearing their rehearsal in the back of their Luton van - sounded great there too. Loads of crazy energy and great fun at 2am. The other main highlight was PLAY festival which rocked the juggling festival type genre thingy. The first time I saw The Badical they were blowing up a jungle dome in the desert with their twisted science, a potent concoction of multi-flavoured bass music.

Last time I saw Andrew Marsh he was clinging onto the back of a bass buggy mobile soundsystem on Hackney Marshes, a mutant Mothercare vehicle for outdoor-types being put to good use to protect a darling pair of speakers, busy blasting beats into the assembled ranks of BBQ eating warehouse-dwellers. From what I remember, swigging cider as the sun set over the East Coast railway, his set scoped classic hip hop to 90s cheese filtered through various prisms of flitched out hip-hop, IDM and dubstep. There was also lots of other stuff so pleasantly unexpected that I can't remember it.

When I asked Andrew for some compressed BBQ Marsh-hop he pointed me towards the full set of The Badical mixtapes, from which the hi tek hip hop number most closely resembles what I was trying to recapture. It sweeps from J Dilla and Foreign Beggars through RJD2, The Knife and Four Tet to The Glitch Mob, Mochipet and Modeselektor. Badassical innit.

I've been having this kinda existential crisis with my whole life lately. Thankfully though, after another day of suffocating in my mentally over stimulating and anxiety inducing work, I left the office to the sounds of four mixes I've recently downloaded and went to sit by the river, where I achieved a more zen-like state of glitchitation. So I quit my job to become a professional juggler, and moved to Barcelona to make street shows... it's going well!

Funk breaks mash-up all over da place

Ever since your gran started calling everything a 'mash-up', the sub-genre of funky breaks combos has swelled like a goose in a grain store. Driven by the likes of A.Skillz and Featurecast, labels like Bombstrikes and the ever growing Ghetto Funk crew, the number of tunes being cut and shunted on a daily basis has been reaching all-you-can-eat levels of abundancy.

If you don't know what I'm talking about (where have you been since 2004?), making a funky breaks mash-up involves taking a familiar vocal / bassline / riff / chorus / sample, blending it with at least one other familiar vocal / bassline / riff / chorus / sample and pouring it over some funky mid-tempo beats, with plenty of bouncing elastic bass thrown for good measure.

Having almost completely exhausted James Brown samples lately, DJ's searching for something different have been using more and more classic hip hop, reggae, funk and music like wot I grew up with. Breaks has always been good at resampling classic tunes and assimilating different styles of music, so this just seems to be a further blurring of the lines to the point that even the individual productions can no longer be identified in the melting pot.

What does this all mean? Have breaks DJs now given up writing original tunes? Does your nan know more than she's letting on? I have no idea, but it all sounds good and it's damn fun to dance to. Here's a few of the tastiest mixtapes I've been enjoying this month:

Plenty of the usual full on driving womp basslines overlain with cascading melodies and genuinely unique noises. Beautifully composed as usual with lots of originality. Clever dubstep, not just your usual womp-womp-womp. My favourite so far is Flourescent and Up In the Clouds - both lovely and glowing - like a musical HUG! The high end of 58 Degrees is a nice cascading synth line with good driving underlying womp. STAiRWAY is some heavy shnizzle... reminded me of NitGRit a bit bit. Block Party is heavy too with a more jungalistic bassline, but too hectic for me though, but can see it making a dance floor heave. Great EP all round, good variety and top kwality innit... and free!! FFS!

Rumpus Spring Ball Review and return of the Badical

So last night saw me and my dodgy Peachi-bum-knee doing some carefree, yet careful mainly-one-leg-dancing, at the amazing Rumpus Spring Ball (8th April 2011). Very much in the spirit of the Burning Man Decompression parties and run by Nowhere regulars (headed by the lovely and generous Santi I believe), there was a ram jammed venue with about 6 rooms featuring different artists and acts and visuals. You can see for yourself in the flyer below, or on the website here or directly here. Particular favourites were the kazoo-a-longs in the main area (A-team, final countdown? very funny and surreal) and the circus acts in the main room (oooh and the pole dancing was OK I suuuuuppose - if you like that sort of thing - and frankly who doesn't? ;)

Since electro-swing doesn't really float my boat (just the electro please, you can keep the swing where it belongs - in the 50's ta), I spent most of the night in the Ubertown room featuring the jungle-is-massive theme and the famous ball pen. Although the acoustics were pretty bad at the back of the room, which was unfortunately at times the only place there was room to dance (successful night I guess), once you could get to within about 10feet of the main speakers things got better. Josh played his usual hard hitting dub step and had the floor rocking (MM review here).

But the highlight for me was listening to the Badicals play live again.... this time in a slightly less psychadelic receptive state of mind than last time I heard them at Nowhere (reviewed here) I was interested to see if I could still get into their pretty hard mashed up and twisted sound. And I could for most of the set, although at times I felt they went beyond what I could tune in to with too much sharp and punchy kick drum and not enough deeper-warmer melodic bass - which makes it sounds very hard a technoey to me, but I appreciated it all the more for sometimes being more challenging than I could handle - which was only about 20% of the time. Which I think is about right if you are exploring the boundary limits of your musical taste.

And the stuff they play is just soooo original and different beat-wise and break-down wise, it's a really refreshing pleasure to hear it. Let alone the great energy they give off in their exagerated-knob-twisting (music geeks equivalent of a guitar crotch thrust I guess), violent head knodding, great face pulling and fist pumping moves - that is when they weren't 'interacting' with the decor!! Very powerful set all round and nice to see the boys hanging out a dancing it up for the rest of the night too - thanks guys, stay bad and radical - i.e. badical - innit ;)

Eggcellent electro, techfunk and dubstep rebirth

I am a rather excited music bunny this week - obviously cos it's nearly easter and that means chocolate eggs (and I suppose the rebirth of Jesus if that floats your boat) but more importantly, there have been a load of awesome new music releases lately! The easter bunny has definitely brought generous portions of fat chocolatey bass for us all to gobble up. :D

Two labels in particular are definitely dishing out the dirt at the moment - in the best possible way of course! Here's my selection of favourites from Massive Music, a shiny new(ish) label set up by Schroff, a dancefloor-destroying dubstep and electrohouse artist.

Latest favourite is his dubstep mix, packed full of choons that converted me to liking the genre! - tracks like his remix of EASTMANN - 'Spellcheck' prove that dubstep can be much more than just wobwobwobwob! (nothing wrong with wobs, I just like a bit of variation!) Intelligent, naughty and blended with wobbly electro, it's a perfect contrast with the next track, 'Burning up' (Torqux & Twist rmx). Deep, growling basslines are punctuated with groovy, twisty breakdowns reminiscent of a snakey Indian palace.

so give this mix a listen even if dubstep isn't your usual thing - smart, filthy WOBZ ftw!

Talking of Eastmann (real name Nik Cedraeus), his new electrohouse/ techno project is definitely worth checking out. I tried to describe his style, then realised the description on his facebook page is unbeatable! -

'A fine, deep, full-flavoured blend of electro and techno. Sprinkled with a dose of crunch; sharpened by a spot of filth;sweetened with a touch of groove; blended with a twist of glitch. Wonderland Burning Night Paris: Melting the Moulin Rouge with pure hot awesomesauce

So this weekend Polo-la-ra invited me, Peachi and the rest of the Musical Mana / Ra Family over to Paris for a French Burners party at La Machine de Moulin Rouge. I was asked to DJ alongside OshJ, Burning Max and other Nowhere/burner/French DJs, while the girls were lined up to hoop onstage. Then, at the last minute, we needed a stand in for Seanan who got blocked by passport control... booo.... but step in MaryMissMary!

Although we never doubted them, it turns out that Polo and the other French Burners know how to throw THE BEST PARTY EVER! The art was incredible, from vacuum packed humans to lush VJing and all the DJs and stage performers totally rocked it, Mary in particular blowing quite a few socks off. It was literally awesome.

If you didn't make it, no worries; just get dressed up like a nutter, invite loads of cool people over and blast out these mixes at full volume while grinning like La Vache qui Rit!

Stomps whomps and blomps

Hi all...
Sorry it's taken so long since my first post! I iz a busy bee... I do not recommend final year of university to anyone. Entirely unpleasant experience - that I'm paying for!! :/

However, I do have some tasty things for you that I WOULD like to recommend. After my last breaks- focussed scribble, I'm back into psychedelic territory this week :) Maybe that's because everyone I'm studying at uni seems to be mad! (Having a knock-on effect). Also, I've been remembering all the old psy acts I love and wondering what new sounds I can get my psy-hungry teeth into. hahahah. Dark psy isn't my thing really, so I'm not enjoying a lot of main-room music at parties these days...:( I have tried! But the cheeky full-on chunky texture still seems to be what gets me stomping - I just need a fun element I think!

Anyway, I really must mention NEUROPLASM to you all. Brighton based duo Felix and Chris are the new(ish) pioneers in night-time rinse-athons in my opinion! They've been producing for a few years now, but have recently got the recognition they deserve on a chunkadelic new release, 'B-right-on' by Blue Hour sounds.featuring Mood Deluxe, Antispin, Sonic Species and many more top British psy artists, this is an unmissable new album that features PROPA banging intelligent psytrance! (not so much of it these days, in my humble opinion.)

Bewildebeast by Neuroplasm is possibly their best creation so far: dark(ish), immersive and slightly twisted, it also injects some naughty, cheeky fun that I think characterises their unique sound:

If you follow any glitch hop producers on Soundcloud, you're bound to recognise this little guy from the many supportive comments and shouts from the Blunt Instrument guys. For the last few years this Brisbane duo have been releasing their own full flavour wobbly glitch-hop and mid-tempo breaks for free on Bandcamp - check out the remixes on Noise Farming Vol 1 and the Total Hip Replacement EP. In the last few months the boys have released some even better tracks. First up was Battle Toad, one of my favourite tracks from An-ten-nae's third installment of his scene defining Acid Crunk collections.

Then last month they've released their first paid for EP, Twice Baked on Simplify Records. Hands Full and Slightly More are both wicked tracks, but it's Sack Full that really gets my taste buds tingling. Built around a dance hall drum riddim, it's got a thick elastic baseline and a building bouncy beat, with just enough high end ping to get your brain tweaking. 'Bounce c'mon....bust to this'. Damn right I will.

2010 was the year that wobbly, funk mid-tempo breaks and glitch-hop really landed. Towards the end of the year Love and Light dropped a gem of an EP - Crunk Junkee - on Simplify Records, who are fast becoming one of my favourite labels at the moment. Hailing from Reno, right next to Black Rock City, these guys make some proper lush bass bounces. Essential for anyone into Opiuo and JPodtbc, although a bit more downtempo. The two new tracks both have great names: "Evil Fembot" and "Robot Whores" and the former is produced by Mr. Mirra and Mary Miss Fairy, the latter just by Mr. Mirra - they both have a stunningly pounding bass and a phat driving beat and some good fembot samples in there (one from the top SciFi film Surrogates I believe). L.O. Peachi ere: Introducing my 2nd mix of funky ass breaks. Much more groovy than my last full power one and (if I may say so) a bit bettera DJ-skills-wise. Learnt some new tricks, so hopefully a bit smoother on the transitions. Thanks to C-Ra Morbjit for the pointers and to Josh for introducing me to Feed Me. Basically I used three Feed Me tracks as my starting point for the mix and managed to keep two bangers in for the last few tracks (I had to drop 'Merdez Moi' as it didn't quite fit... pooh|!) - I love Feed Me: Grand Theft Ecstacy and in many ways is exactly my style of hip-wiggling-cheeky-stop-blip-womp kinda-track [favourite recent quote: writing about music is like dancing about architecture]. Hopefully you'll hear what I mean when you hear it as the climax of the mix ;)

Other highlights for me in the mix is being able to finally include the Far Too Loud remix of Lilly Alan's 'Not Fair'. Pleased that I could mix it into Party Pushers from Fort Knox Five too (a family favourite). Also included is the exellently named 'You can't spell slaughter without laughter' - love that drop - just makes me zoom into the future on an epic scale. Also love the opening track 'Open Your Eyes', which I have listened too 5 times in a row a few times, easily! Track listing way belooooow!

Anyway, had a great weekend music geeking with Chris-Ra and got a real bug for progressing further with music geekery on all fronts. In summer 2009 someone lost a monkey en route to Bristol zoo, and Parker became a cult hero for fusing dubstep and electro swing....

Come 2011 and Parker's worked out the answer to the question we've all been asking, whilst putting together the best mixtape of the year to date. He draws on his own extensive arsenal of refixes hold things together while a good choice of MC tracks keeps the pace over the bouncing beats . The mix is peppered with some proper comedy samples too, including my fave eve dubstep quote from this video.

The scope is epic, with hiphop, glitch hop, funk, breaks, rock, dubstep and d'n'b overlaid and mashed up together throughout. Snatches of familiar tunes creep in for a few bars at a time before morphing straight into the next thing. If he used records (rather than control vinyl) he'd be tossing discs over his shoulder like Jeff Mills.

...and for the swing fans? How about Missy Eliot mashed up with Glen Miller?

Bad Tango's Analogue Hedgehog, Flithy Peasant and Disco Steve

Helloo - Katty here - finally got around to writing a music blog thanks to Peachi & co.! Looking forward to sharing my favourite artists' music with you - new and old- so be it breaks, filth, full on psytrance, dubby dub dub or mash potato, I'll do my best to give you a tasty selection of the chunkiest funkiest beats out there :D

First up: my favourite psy-breaks artist of the moment, who has literally burst onto the scene within the last few months with his astoundingly astute production skillz and scintillatingly spiky sound. Monsieur Will Railton aka BAD TANGO is only 22, but has already created a most excellent reputation: since smashing up the dancefloor at gigs such as Waveform festival 2010, Mr Tango's crafty creations are sure to be snapped up by record labels and DJs alike as he continues to produce top drawer choons.

And one of my personal favourites: so aptly named, 'Analogue Hedgehog' truly evokes a plump, squidgy hedgehog covered with sharp metallic spikes, shuffling and bumbling along enjoying the groove! How he makes it sound simultaneously soft and spiky escapes me (think Peachi's alliteration might be catching?!)

If you take your break(fast?) with an edge of tech funk filthiness, look no further than this obese mix by dirt fiend FILTHY PEASANT (Matt Lawrence). True to his name, this rather sneaky vagabond schmuches up psy and funk influences with technical prowess. The middle phase of Far Too Loud, Olmec and Sam Hell tracks particularly floats my boat! Here's his December mix, the best I reckon:

Last but not least, DISCO STEVE is a psytrance mixologist that has caught my attention recently. If you're into wild psychedelic journeys to planet zogg and beyond, this mix will be right up your street! Hovering on the edge of my threshold for full-on/'dark' tolerance but definitely making me want to stomp like a maniac, Steven Roberts shows his relentless passion for psy - especially from South Africa. Last track is stupendous!

As my first post, it is a privilege to introduce you to the Barry White of dubstep. If your partner is into it (dubstep or Barry White or both), prepare a gourmet diner with candle lights and rose petals all over the table and put this mix on the stereo. Heck, forget the candle lights and the roses, forget even the diner. Just play the mix. I can guarantee that this will be a night to remember.
The mix is on the downtempo side, nothing like some high-charged whoampwhoampwhoamp acid dubsteppy whompass tune. It's got this calm, warm, self-confidence vibe that says "Oh yeah, we'll get there bebe but no rush, we've got allllllll night". Just like Barry White.

How did I stumble upon this mix? I don't remember. Honestly. I must have been surfing the wave for quite some time, loosing track of time and space when suddenly, BAM! I was listening to the Love Step mix by Witness, a DJ from Pittsburgh, PA. And soon enough the magic happened. I kept saying "Oulala ouiiiiiii, c'est bon...!".

***Howdy folks! Dave "The" Knox here...long time listener, first time blogger. I'm fresh outta bloggin' bootcamp so go easy on me sarge...***

This mix is literally still dripping little 1's and 0's as it's so fresh off the mp3 press... the genre creating Dutty Moonshine have bent to the will of the baying public by releasing a mash-up mix of their eclectic rave-driven Electro Swing style.

Dutty (Don Von Drop It & FunkunFurl) have been steadily kicking the arse into Electro Swing for a while now... dirty little dubstep fused ditties (Soundcloud "Spanky Tonk"!) have popped up here and there sparking enough interest for a tour last summer that took them to such diverse places as Paris and Bethnal Green (via quite a few other locales!).

I'm crap at descriptions so here's theirs: Swing for the rave generation and rave for the swing generation. With backgrounds of Drum and Bass, Hip-Hop, Funk, Electro and Breaks and a passion for vintage music, scantily clad ladies and dapper décolletage comes a duet DJ show which brings you back to the 30's with big bad dutty basslines thrown in to satisfy all those insatiable needs.

Peachi here - Well it is with much aural pleasure that I present to you a link or two to a veritable plethora of deliciously dirty and driving dubstep DeehJay mixes - by none other than the man himself Josh. This is the gent that melted my brain at Nowhere Festival several times and had me blowing synapses all over the place. He also worked his arse off and put together the 'Jungle is Massive' Ubertown camp that was the centre of several of my top moments of Nowhere (great name for a camp too!). See previous post about the Badicals for edivence... Thanks Josh!

Nowhere Festival is the European Regional Burning Man gathering and he also DJ's at the associated London Decompression Parties (an indoor winter Burning Man'esque ra-union party) and he regularly makes socks dissapear there too ;)

Electro mix 14/12/10 by OshJ

So I'm just gonna give you the link to his soundcloud page where there are 9 mixes to choose from: 5 dubstep, 2 glitch, 1 drum & bass and one electro. I have to say the Electro Mix included above is my favourite, although there are moments in the other dubstep mixes that got me drooling. As hoped for, Josh remembered to press record and added two more mixes from playing out last weekend (15-16th Jan 2011), which I am still working my way through. So the mixes at the top of the page on his soundcloud page are fresh out the packet ladies and gents... mmmmm!

If I was gonna give some constructive feedback, I'd say that dubstep gets a bad name for sometimes just putting some womp bass behind a well known track without really meshing it in well or making it into something new and improved (it can get a bit samey and formulaic). Which is why I think I tend to veer towards dubstep producers who mainly create original tracks rather than just remixes (e.g. Mimosa, NitGrit). That said, some remixes are better than others and there are some less good selections in the Josh mixes in my opinion. But that's just my opinion - different peeps will probably like different ones, so I guess it's hard to predict what's gonna work as a supasta DeehJay. The main thing is that most of the time they are just full power inspiringly PHAT tracks!! Enjoy!

NastyNasty bears his Lazer Soul

For me, NastyNasty's Priceless was one of the stand out tracks on this year's Acid Crunk compilation from An-Ten-Nae. It's a mournful vocal repeated over sleepy dubstep with creeping electric lazer noises is a pretty good introduction to his sound, which takes that sad but beautiful element of dubstep and makes it something so much more....

Hailing from Okland, CA, NastyNasty first came to my attention on Soundcloud through a joint remix of Rn'b classic Say My Name with NiT GRiT. Unbelievably it still hasn't reached it's download limit despite it's hair raising combination of classic dubstep, NiT GRiT's earth shaking lazer bass and NastyNasty's off kilter swirling lazer synth - so grab it while it's still hot!

Both artists share a sense of meoldy, but while NiT GRiT goes for all out lister submission through the power of his bass, immersion in NastyNasty's sound is a more subtle process. His beats are more broken, his melodies layered in more comples patterns and his overall palette more eclectic - more along the lines of Slugabed or Nosaj Thing. More recently he's dropped a free VIP remix of No Name which lets the bass bubble as much as wobble as the arpegiating high end weaves in and out of an achingly wistful vocal. Perhaps the best this he's produced to date:

Meanwile this wicked remix of Justice's New Jack seems to pull him out of his dubsteppy roots into a funkier mid-tempo crunk disco vibe:

MiHKAL: It's a SNUGLiFE for some

This time two years ago I found Bay area DJ MiKHAL's GH3TTO $P!RiTU4L M!XT@P3 over on Glitch Hop Forum. It introduced me to some classic tunes and built from a "nice overlaid glitch-hop that starts chilled and then begins dropping bass bombs about halfway through".

His latest SNUGLiFE mix or "75 minutes of Audio Fondling" keeps the chilled vibe most of the way through, but still steers us into some pretty tasty backwaters of bass. He eases us in through Mimosa's lush remix of Breathe by Telepopmusik going really nicley into an Akira Kiteshi remix and building to take in recent epics like like Grit Shifter, Joker's Ain't Got a Name and Mimosa'S Your Love. I'm also liking the sound of Sharps and Guttstar who I've not come across before.

Some of the real highlights though are the tasty mash-ups of chilled crunk classics put together by MiHKAL himself, which you can download as stand alones from his soundcloud. Check out Fine Day on the Kriptonite and Enter The Whatever.

All in all it's an epic journey through some lush whompscapes capped off by a chilled John Lennon remix that actually works. Sit back and allow those ears to be fondled....

So one of the joys of meeting new people at an extended New Years Eve Party (thanks Kev-Ra n ClaiRa) is that you get to meet new people and in the ensuing chill out you can hear some top new mixes. So it's with big thanks to Oli-Ra (also recently starring in the Spinning @ christmas party show) that I bring you this lovely warm and funky mix from JPOD - the Beat Chef. Not as full power as the usual stuff we post on here but perfect for a mellow dance or up tempo chill out - and plenty of dub-step and wompa wobble-a-tron (or Wobblehop and Midtempo Breaks as JPOD calls it!). Lots of playful sillyness in there too with Fraggle Rock (Fraggle Womp.... Ha ha! ;) , the Smurfs and the Muppets making a welcome appearance at the end. Some great re-mixes of Nelly Furtado and AC/DC at the start after a quite fun intro if you listen to it through the voice-coder. My favourite bit is at about 48mins 20secs where "Hobostyle" kicks in and edges of my lips move towards my ears. LOVE IT!
