Bassnectar: 2010 IDJ mixtape

Mashing up breaks, d'n'b, reggae, dubstep and glitch-hop in his own genre and tempo defying style, Bassnectar rules. I have very little else to say on the matter except that you NEED this mixtape like you need bass to breath...

I'll leave the rest to the man himself:
Welcome to another Bassnectar Transmission.

This episode is 44 minutes and 25 seconds of 10th-generation genre-re-wiring, exploring bass music through an open-minded lens, regardless of tempo, or even beat-structure… this sound clash aims straight for your body, with the intent to melt you down into a fidgeting, wobbling mess of enthusiasm and delight. In addition to some of my favorite old records and samples, this mix features several brand new Bassnectar tracks, heaps of exclusive edits, re-edits, and re-re-re-edits. Lot’s of re. Lot’s of mix. Lot’s of edits. We tore our favorite drum & bass to shreds, injected hip hop with some pogo-stick bass, amped up the tempo of dubstep, freaked out the gypsies, gave a nod to the dreamy 80’s and ended up similar to where we started off: omni-tempo maximalism strikes again.

Enjoy the ride.

Euro-burners: London Decompression 2009

Having experienced Burning Man vicariously this year, through my girl D and our other friends that went out, on Saturday I joined them at the London Decompression party – a re-union for UK based burners to reconnect and reminisce over the seven days at Black Rock City, run by a group of playa vetrans Euro-burners .

Like Burning Man itself, it’s all about participation - all the performers, DJs and crew are volunteers who have bought tickets - so ahead of the event I sent a dubstep and glitch-hop demo over to Justin aka VJ Meno who was curating the sound and visuals for the night. I didn't expect to be selected, so it was a nice surprise when I checked my emails on Thursday to find out I was on first... followed by a mild panic.

The plan was to bring some of that West Coast, playa dust coated, bass flavour to East London and warm up the room with some heavy dubstep, reggae and glitch-hop. In the end my set got cut short due to a late start, but you can listen to it here in it's entirety:

Decompression Glitch-Hop by Morbgit

Tracklisting:

Edit - Ants
Freeland - Do You (Pantyraid rmx)
Don G - Mrs U (Zeno Goddess Rmx)
Liondub ft. Jah Dan & Sotto Bless - Heartbroken
Spystep - Portomental
Eskmo - San Francisco (The Rhythm)
Larytta - You Got Nothing (Lazer Sword Rmx)
Ooah - Tuesday Again
Good Buddha - Part Preserve (Tipper rmx)
Vibesquad - Snagglespuss
Knowa Knowonet feat. Seasunz, Firewater, Wiseproof & New Eon - Free Energy
Subvert - Size Matters
Alborosie - Kingston Town
X-Clan feat. Damian Marley - Culture United
Oaah - Heat up the night
Defcon - Knock Knock

Me & You - Last Night (Bassnectar rmx)
ediT - The Game Is Not Over
Matty G - West Coast Rocks (The Glitch Mob rmx)
Nalepa - Monday (The Glitch Mob rmx)

Also playing on the night was Jurassik (Ben Child - above) who runs London breaks night and record label Supatronix and the awesome resource that is ThisIsBreaks.com. He was really enjoying himself, pumping the dancefloor with funky party breaks and, when we met later on, he turned out to be a really nice guy as well. You can check out the mix below and have a listen to his own tunes on Soundloud.

Jurassik’s Deep as the Thames Boat Party Mix

Future Funk Squad ft Mojo – Blow (En:Vision)
BSD – Intoxicated (iBreaks)
Jurassik – How to Pick Up Chicks (Supatronix)
9BO – Antilightbulb (Glack Audio)

Toby Lyons was up after Ben. A bit of a wizard at the controls, he was mashing up some bad boy electro and breaks before pulling out into party style d’n’b, much to the joy of the crowd. Have a look at Toby's Myspace for mini-mixes.

I've reviewed the whole night for Spoonfed.co.uk - you can read the full write up here. Much love to my surrogate burning crew (below - me looking like a twat in the middle)!

ill.gates: autopirate

By far one of my favourite albums of the last year is ill.gates - autopirate, which came out on muti music in December. Blending hip-hop, glitch, breaks and dubstep with on and off scratching, tight vocals and psychedelic sounds, the album is full of bass heavy variation. I'm still listening to it as much as I was then.

This track with Irma Vemp is getting the re-mix treatment and a re-release in October this year:

In fact it's so good that I got in touch on myspace at the time to ask for a mix. Nothing materialised but now, just as ill.gates makes his way to the playa for Burning Man he's just dropped a live set full on fresh tracks over on the awesome Jungo Road. If you haven't heard of ill.Gates yet (aka. The Phat Conductor) make sure you read the full article.

ill.gates is not the only one heading out to Black Rock City. He will be joined by Bassnectar, a whole bunch of Muti Music artists and just about every other member of the San Francisco/US glitch-hop family. Oh, and my girlfriend has just set off from Reno. Any guesses where I want to be right now? Bloody job. At least I've got this to enjoy...

Agent Smith: Psyfunkscratchbreaks

Whilst bouncing around by the Origin stage at Glade (see review below) I was made a very happy man when Dan aka. Agent Smith (above right) pressed a copy of his summer promo into my hands. Unfortunately the CD didn't survive the next three festivals in my bag, but at last I've got the mp3.

Why so happy? 'cos Agent Smith plays the funkiest badass breaks this side of London! The number of times I've been flagging at a party or after-party in London and found myself bouncing around at obscure times in the morning/afternoon to some upbeat choons pumping out the system... only to find it's Dan who has taken the reins. A lot of the time it's improv too!

Dan's receipe for breaks starts with plenty of funk, to which he adds a good portion of chunk, a sprinkling of scratch and an ample squeeze of psychedeliciousness. As this mix shows he certainly knows how to get your feet moving. If you like Far Too Loud you'll love it....

Beat Bizzare and Backdraft

I met Michelle (aka. Ebere) from new Manchester label Beat Bazaar on Thursday. Artists on the label include Backdraft, Veba (Groove Armarda vocalist), Ebere herself (sung with Gorillaz and many others) and MC Mr Fox. Collaborating together a Beat Bazaar Live, they're going to be taking part in an event I'm helping with called the decibel Performing Arts Showcase. It's being held in Manchester in September so will be home turf for them.

The showcase should co-incide with the release of the first album on Beat Bazaar, Backdraft's 'We Know Where You Live', which is due autumn 2009. I've been enjoying Backdraft tracks on compilations for some time now so really looking forward to hearing the album and seeing what they're all up to with the live dubstep/breakbeat band. Check out the Beat Bazaar website where they've got a badass new mix up feat fresh tracks from Backdraft as well as Bassbin Twins, Deekline, Chimpo and more.

Aquasky get fresh

I've had an eye on Aquasky since first hearing a track on a Freestylers compilation. I have to say, it doesn't always work for me but when it does they can nail a wicked dancefloor tune, and the Passenger compilations are always good. They've just dropped this mix on Noiseporn via The Fat Club (thanks to De Rouge for the heads up!) showcasing a fresh sound which seems to be heading more in the direction of their Body Snatchers side project with Baobinga. Have a listen and see what you think...

Breafastaz: Guest mix on Breakzlinkz

Breakfastaz have been a bit quite lately.. their Myspace page is looking a bit like it did last year! Anyway, new things may be rumbling in the bass boys jungle as they've turned up with a fresh April Promo Mix featured on Breakzlinkz. Let's hope so, their remix of Freestyler's 'Warrior Charge' is one of my favourite dancefloor tunes and if this mix is anything to go by they are well and truly back on form with some proper mash up genius...

Freeland: Do You Cope with badass remixes and new album on the way

I'm at risk of turning into a walking advert for Marine Parade.... the new Freeland single 'Do You', out today, has four incredible remixes on it by some of my favourite producers at the moment Joker, PANtYRAiD, Moonbootica and High Rankin. Listen to the full tracks on Discobelle who have also got their mitts on this new mixtape with tracks off the forthcoming album, Cope™ and a new Alex Metric tune. Sweeeet!

Adam Freeland went to Brighton and all we got was this lousy mix tape (Direct link)

Now & Them was a huuuge album for me when it came out in 2004(?). You can pre order Cope™, his first artist album in 6 years, from FreelandFM

Mary Miss Fairy and the murder mystery

Had a sweet bank holiday weekend on a mate's farm in Wales. Barns, BBQ, soundsystem, woods, friends and camping... what more do you need? Rennie Pilgrem mixes tracks through ipod headphones

I was struck by this story in The Telegraph today...

"Flatter sounds associated with digital music are now being chosen by some record producers as young listeners no longer appreciate high fidelity recordings.

Researchers believe the use of iPods and computers to play music by millions of consumers over several years has raised the collective perception of the sound quality.

Their findings suggest that the veneration of vinyl records by purists following the arrival of the CD in the 1980s is being repeated by modern day music producers exasperated by the apparent indifference of young listeners to the metallic 'sizzle' associated with the MP3 players used for digital sound." - Telegraph.co.uk

And who did they interview?

Rennie Pilgrem, a dance music producer, said he mixed his tracks while listening to them through iPod headphones to cater to the less refined tastes of today's youth. "To my ears iPods are not even as good quality as cassette tape," he said. "But once someone gets used to that sound then they feel comfortable with it." - Telegraph.co.uk

Babylon breaks: Dreadzone Soundsystem and Skool of Thought

So for our Valentines we couldn't resist bouncing around to the originators of dubwise breaks, Dreadzone Soundsystem at the inSpiral Lounge in Camden. Greg Dread was on the controls with MC Spee toasting to classic breaks, dubstep and old skool remixes with the occasional Dreadzone classic thrown in. Perfect lover's rock!

If you missed it, check out this set from Breaksday at Glade last year. Bring on the summer festies again!

Dreadzone + MC Spee + Earl 16 Live @ Glade Breaksday - 2008

Supporting Dreadzone was Liquid Djems, co-founder of Liquid Records and one third of the electro breaks phatness that is Atomic Drop. As well as some Brother Culture, dubstep and tunes from Liquid's latest down-tempo compilation Soul Vibrations 2, he picked up the pace with some tunes from Ed Solo & Skool of Thought. Their Random Acts of Kindness album was one of my favourites from last year - buy it here if you haven't got it!

Skool of Thought have just dropped a new promo mix:
