Your Niece / Bassnectar, The Collysilium, Secret Garden Party, UK
The Collysilium and the Bearded Kitten scaled up big time at this year's Secret Garden Party. The hay bale amphitheatre was about twice as big as last year. During the day it played host to mud wrestling and all manner of silliness, then at night it turned into the best dancefloor on site. Headlining the Saturday night was none other than US bass music pioneer Bassnectar himself, his first UK festival appearance in 5 years. On just before him was Your Niece, who's been pioneering West Coast crunk on these shores since before everyone else cottoned on, up for his biggest support set to date. He certainly didn't disappoint. Together they delivered well over two hours off unadulterated bass pleasure while the Collysilium went completely nuts. Amazing.

I could have chosen Mim0Sa's set at Fractal Nation, Stephan Jacobs at Dub Scouts, or any number of afternoons dancing at Distrikt. Purely because it was one of those beautiful moments where so much comes together, though, my favourite set at Burning Man 2011 has to be Lee Burridge on the Robot Heart at dawn on Saturday morning. Beautiful, minimal blissed out, groovy music in a truly amazing place with truly wonderful people.

Peachi here: Well here it is - after a little wait and some last minute technical issues - we finally have the latest MMF mix - Smarter than the Average Bear.

This mix reminds me alot of 'Wonk This Way' (my other favourite MMF mix) but is definately much MUCH phatter in alot of places! Similar progression from more minimalist stuff to a rocking Dirty Disco Filth section in the middle, with some real mind melters making mince meat of your mind at the end! So heavy are the tracks towards the end and I have to admit I was a bit scared (luckily I'd eaten my hedonistic-porridge this morning so I was OK) ;)

Actually towards the end of the mix it reminded me of her set at Matter earlier in the year, which at the time was right on the edge of my 'heavy-techno' radar. But since then my tastes have changed to appreciate this flavour much more... I think it comes across better on headphones also! Its also much less playful on the dance floor than the more dirty disco tracks. But then its also great to hear the heavy bass with your whole body at a club on massif speakers.... so it seems there are many different ways and moods to access this mix in! So my advice is to keep coming back to it and different tracks will stand out at different times. This is a sign of a good mix in my books (but thats just my humble opinion - but I'm usually right (in my mind!)).

Here's a 'random' picture I selected of Mary on her obviously-a-less-than-smart bear skin rug, thinking about her new set list (probably!). Shame really, if she made a bit of effort she could actually look all right ;)

MaryMissFairy: Wonk This Way

It's quite a statement, but... MaryMissFairy (Mary Reilly) is probably my favourite DJ of 2009. Not including her vocal duties on Nagual Sound Experiment's 2007 psychedelic dubstep track Hexorcism,I first heard her quaking the top room at Alpha Omega in April, first met her in May and was last blown away by her set in tiny room at Wonkay Records' Turned Toon in October.

Why does she qualify for this staus? Well, she seems to be mining a stream of sound that I've been slowly gravitating towards for the last year or so. A crunchy, techy blend of techno,progressive house, electro and breaks being led by Tom Real and Rouge Element (Disco of Doom), Atomic Drop, Meat Katie, Elite Force and some releases on Tribal Vision. She's also introduced me to the amazing dirtyloud and Felguk.... all of whom are present and correct in her fresh Wonk This Way mix below.

Mary's just set up her Soundcloud page, so you can also grab Miss Scarlet in the Library with the lead pipe and keep up to date with future mixes. She has also recently been made a label DJ for Wonkay Records, in charge of the A&R for electro and techno, and will be compiling a compilation due for release 2010 - can't wait!
