JPOD (the beat chef) - Usual Flow

Peachi Here - Happy New Beers all! Welcome to 2011, may it be full of funky music to brighten your life via your massive ears and into your highly tuned mental pleasure zones ;)

So one of the joys of meeting new people at an extended New Years Eve Party (thanks Kev-Ra n ClaiRa) is that you get to meet new people and in the ensuing chill out you can hear some top new mixes. So it's with big thanks to Oli-Ra (also recently starring in the Spinning @ christmas party show) that I bring you this lovely warm and funky mix from JPOD - the Beat Chef. Not as full power as the usual stuff we post on here but perfect for a mellow dance or up tempo chill out - and plenty of dub-step and wompa wobble-a-tron (or Wobblehop and Midtempo Breaks as JPOD calls it!). Download the "Usual Flow" mix on soundcloud here and by clicking the down arrow below - track listing at end of blog entry.

usual flow by JPOD the beat chef

Lots of playful sillyness in there too with Fraggle Rock (Fraggle Womp.... Ha ha! ;) , the Smurfs and the Muppets making a welcome appearance at the end. Some great re-mixes of Nelly Furtado and AC/DC at the start after a quite fun intro if you listen to it through the voice-coder. My favourite bit is at about 48mins 20secs where "Hobostyle" kicks in and edges of my lips move towards my ears. LOVE IT!

You can also download a free EP "Tunes Pack" here with several of his tunes on for NOWT! - I recommend his remix of "Radiohead - Creep" (lovely complex and warm womp dub remix) and "How We Really Rock". Enjoy!

You can buy his music and stems etc here and there are other mixes and tracks on his soundcloud page that are worth checking out (like Collective Promo and 30mins Mess). Still working through it all myself... but all good so far!

Finally a big thanks to Chris-Ra Fatty Morbjit for his work on the Musical Mana Blog over the years - seriously enriched my life musically and it is a joy to chip in what I can! Love love love muzik innit ;) [I have to say it was great fun playing both our full power mixes back to back at the NYE party and having a good stomp to both....RRRAAAAaaaaa!]

Radio Ra: Musical Mana Podcast - Fail #1

Inspired by our posts on this blog and our shared love of the artists and music we feature on it, Peachi and I are trying to get a podcast off the ground under the monicker of Radio Ra.

So far we've only managed a few sketchy pilots as we attempt to get our heads round the technical side of things. The first attempts at a joint podcast took place in Nottingham a few months ago, but were hampered by technical issues and far too much alcohol.

Since then Peachi's had a go at a some more sober solo shows and I recorded my first attempt at a pilot using my spanking new Reloop Digital Jockey 2 mp3 controller last night. I've only used the kit a few times so far so there are a few glitches, in particular a rather obvious technical fail at the end - *must* remember to plug laptop in next time - but mainly there's a whole bunch of fat bass heavy tunes that rock my world right now. Enjoy!

Bassnectar: 2010 IDJ mixtape

Mashing up breaks, d'n'b, reggae, dubstep and glitch-hop in his own genre and tempo defying style, Bassnectar rules. I have very little else to say on the matter except that you NEED this mixtape like you need bass to breath...

I'll leave the rest to the man himself:
Welcome to another Bassnectar Transmission.

This episode is 44 minutes and 25 seconds of 10th-generation genre-re-wiring, exploring bass music through an open-minded lens, regardless of tempo, or even beat-structure… this sound clash aims straight for your body, with the intent to melt you down into a fidgeting, wobbling mess of enthusiasm and delight. In addition to some of my favorite old records and samples, this mix features several brand new Bassnectar tracks, heaps of exclusive edits, re-edits, and re-re-re-edits. Lot’s of re. Lot’s of mix. Lot’s of edits. We tore our favorite drum & bass to shreds, injected hip hop with some pogo-stick bass, amped up the tempo of dubstep, freaked out the gypsies, gave a nod to the dreamy 80’s and ended up similar to where we started off: omni-tempo maximalism strikes again.

Enjoy the ride.

Euro-burners: London Decompression 2009

Having experienced Burning Man vicariously this year, through my girl D and our other friends that went out, on Saturday I joined them at the London Decompression party – a re-union for UK based burners to reconnect and reminisce over the seven days at Black Rock City, run by a group of playa vetrans Euro-burners .

Like Burning Man itself, it’s all about participation - all the performers, DJs and crew are volunteers who have bought tickets - so ahead of the event I sent a dubstep and glitch-hop demo over to Justin aka VJ Meno who was curating the sound and visuals for the night. I didn't expect to be selected, so it was a nice surprise when I checked my emails on Thursday to find out I was on first... followed by a mild panic.

The plan was to bring some of that West Coast, playa dust coated, bass flavour to East London and warm up the room with some heavy dubstep, reggae and glitch-hop. In the end my set got cut short due to a late start, but you can listen to it here in it's entirety:

Nalepa - Monday (The Glitch Mob rmx)

Also playing on the night was Jurassik (Ben Child - above) who runs London breaks night and record label Supatronix and the awesome resource that is ThisIsBreaks.com. He was really enjoying himself, pumping the dancefloor with funky party breaks and, when we met later on, he turned out to be a really nice guy as well. You can check out the mix below and have a listen to his own tunes on Soundloud.

Jurassik’s Deep as the Thames Boat Party Mix

Future Funk Squad ft Mojo – Blow (En:Vision)
BSD – Intoxicated (iBreaks)
Jurassik – How to Pick Up Chicks (Supatronix)
9BO – Antilightbulb (Glack Audio)

Toby Lyons was up after Ben. A bit of a wizard at the controls, he was mashing up some bad boy electro and breaks before pulling out into party style d’n’b, much to the joy of the crowd. Have a look at Toby's Myspace for mini-mixes.

I've reviewed the whole night for Spoonfed.co.uk - you can read the full write up here. Much love to my surrogate burning crew (below - me looking like a twat in the middle)!
