Love and Light: Crunk Junkees from Reno
2010 was the year that wobbly, funk mid-tempo breaks and glitch-hop really landed. Towards the end of the year Love and Light dropped a gem of an EP - Crunk Junkee - on Simplify Records, who are fast becoming one of my favourite labels at the moment. Hailing from Reno, right next to Black Rock City, these guys make some proper lush bass bounces. Essential for anyone into Opiuo and JPodtbc, although a bit more downtempo. Check out the free mini-mix and get the EP before the next one!

DJ Parker: The Monkey Butler Did it Again
In summer 2009 someone lost a monkey en route to Bristol zoo, and Parker became a cult hero for fusing dubstep and electro swing....
Parker- Where's My Monkey? by DJ Parker
Come 2011 and Parker's worked out the answer to the question we've all been asking, whilst putting together the best mixtape of the year to date. He draws on his own extensive arsenal of refixes hold things together while a good choice of MC tracks keeps the pace over the bouncing beats . The mix is peppered with some proper comedy samples too, including my fave eve dubstep quote from this video.
The scope is epic, with hiphop, glitch hop, funk, breaks, rock, dubstep and d'n'b overlaid and mashed up together throughout. Snatches of familiar tunes creep in for a few bars at a time before morphing straight into the next thing. If he used records (rather than control vinyl) he'd be tossing discs over his shoulder like Jeff Mills.
...and for the swing fans? How about Missy Eliot mashed up with Glen Miller?

Morbidly Obese Midget: Mega Meal Deal
London Spinners Party Mix by Morbidly Obese Midget
This is a condensed version of a set I played at the Spinning@ London Jugglers Christmas Party, recorded the following week at the Synergy Spinners Solstice Party. I get a lot of my practice playing for spinners, twirlers and jugglers who are a great audience because if they like what you're playing they'll play harder to it and the floor will become a frenzy of activity, even if there's only five people in the room anyway. The set moves from bass loaded breaks into more straight 4/4 driving electro. The electro almost always gets people moving more, but the breaks is a nice warm up.
TRACKLIST:
Tittsworth - WTF (Deekline and Ed Solo Remix)
The Fort Knox Five - Shift (Deekline and Dustin Hulton Remix)
Sporty-O - International Wingman (DJ Fixx And ILL DJ Chris B Original Mix)
Slyde - Move ya Body
Beat Assasins - Put Em Up (NAPT remix)
Nick Thayer - Let it Go (Cutline remix)
Neurodriver and Atomic Drop - What You Gonna Do?
Far Too Loud - We Want to Dance
Dirty Loud - What U Think
Neelix - Disco Decay (Felguk remix)
Tegma - David's Song
Perfect Stranger - Stardust (Felguk remix)
Morbidly Obese Midget - Droppin bombs on ya glitch - Nov 2010 by Morbidly Obese Midget
Bass bombs straight outta tha suburban jungle! I've been trying to nail a good glitch-hop mix for a while - getting the right balance between bass, glitch and bounce. Drawing from a whole bunch of tunes I've been enjoying over the last few years this comes pretty close to the sound I've been aiming for, keeping the tempo up, the bass whomping and the beats popping. While it gets my head bobbing and my body swaying, I'm not sure it translates too well to the dancefloor, but I'm hoping the Opiuo's more bouncy sound is going to open a whole new range of mid-tempo breaks and glitch-hop next year that will do just that!
TRACKLIST
Mimosa - Pandora's Box
SubverT - Speaker Humpin' (Knight Riderz Remix)
Blunt Instrument - Battle Toad
Nasty Ways - The Good The Bad The Squishy
DJ Vadim - Maximum feat La Methode (Bassnectar & ill.gates remix)
Opiuo - King Prawn
ill.gates & Filastine - Pharma Sutra
SubverT - Curbstomper
Glitchy & Scratchy - Midgets
edIT - Battling Go-Go Yubari in Downtown L.A.
This one's a downtempo dubstep mix. It's an attempt to find the blurred lines between Bristolian 'purple wow' sounds and West Coast whomp and dubstep influenced crunk. The mixing could be better but this was on the fly and I've not had the time to re-do. This is a streaming mix on soundcloud, but hopefully soon I'll find some time to re-work it for a Soundcloud DL.

Ninja Tune XX: XLR8R Podcasts from Coldcut, DJ Food, DK and Toddla T
The first, mixed and compiled by label founder Coldcut and stalwarts DJ Food and MK, is an epic combo of original Ninja classics from Scruff, Food, Hextatic, Amon Tobin, Kid Koala and more recent highpoints from Diplo, Shuttle, Andreya Triana, Daedalus, Toddla T. With plenty of sick remixes from both fresh UK newbloods - Warrior One, Benga, Rustie - and US future hoppers - Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus - it shows just how much the label has influenced and kept up with the progress of beats over the decade since their last milestone.
XLR8R Podcast 170: DJ Food & DK vs. Coldcut (click through for DL and tracklist)
The second is one of the best mixtapes I've downloaded this year from 2010 Ninja Tune signing Toddla T, who landed a massive three album deal with them earlier this year. The mix is so varied you never have time to pin it down - full of dancehall fire, but packed with both evocative old rave skool samples and future beats. Reminiscent of NY label Nightshifters (AC Slater, Hostage, Proper Villans) at their best, with flavours of Diplo, Zinc's Crack House, Buraka and Zomby, it's right on the money and shows how Ninja Tune remain so even after 20 years. I can see myself buying a lot of these tunes...
XLR8R Podcast 168: Toddla T (click through for DL and tracklist)
If you like what you hear Ninja Tune have got two double compilations out to celebrate their anniversary, which include many of the cuts from that first mixtape. Going by the Zen Cuts X CDs which still sound as fresh 10 years on, they're going to be well worth the effort. I've certainly got 'em both on my Xmas list.

Smarter than the average bear - Mary Miss Fairy
Smarter than the average bear by MaryMissFairy
No longer an anticipation, but now an actually astounding amalgamation of aural altercations - this is a journey into some of the most filthy driving electro sounds you'll find this side of Pooh Corner. Make sure you download it fast while you still can!! Yes unbelievably its FREE!
This mix reminds me alot of 'Wonk This Way' (my other favourite MMF mix) but is definately much MUCH phatter in alot of places! Similar progression from more minimalist stuff to a rocking Dirty Disco Filth section in the middle, with some real mind melters making mince meat of your mind at the end! So heavy are the tracks towards the end and I have to admit I was a bit scared (luckily I'd eaten my hedonistic-porridge this morning so I was OK) ;)Actually towards the end of the mix it reminded me of her set at Matter earlier in the year, which at the time was right on the edge of my 'heavy-techno' radar. But since then my tastes have changed to appreciate this flavour much more... I think it comes across better on headphones also! Its also much less playful on the dance floor than the more dirty disco tracks. But then its also great to hear the heavy bass with your whole body at a club on massif speakers.... so it seems there are many different ways and moods to access this mix in! So my advice is to keep coming back to it and different tracks will stand out at different times. This is a sign of a good mix in my books (but thats just my humble opinion - but I'm usually right (in my mind!)).
Here's a 'random' picture I selected of Mary on her obviously-a-less-than-smart bear skin rug, thinking about her new set list (probably!). Shame really, if she made a bit of effort she could actually look all right ;)

Top mix Mary, thanks so much for persevering through the technical issues. It Roxs so much - I have no soxs left! RRRAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa!

Digital Sensation UK - Fletric - free guest mix

Here's the intro from the interview you can find on there too:
"Digital Sensation UK is a newer label on the scene, having been around for just under a year. But they're rapidly gaining attention for two things: beautifully melodic, soundtrack-like breakbeat, and breaking talented new artists. Label head Duane Barry started the label out of a love for progressive breaks and he quickly found out there were plenty of like-minded artists looking for an outlet for their music. Keep reading for a Q&A with the head honcho himself, who threw in not one, but two free tunes and a brand spankin' new mix from label artist Fletric."
Thankyou This is Breaks ;)

Morbidly Obese Midget: Ra Power Mix
For five years now I've been playing around with a crappy old version of Mix Vibes mp3 mixer, inspired by the mixtapes and sets that I love to listen and dance to. Two weeks ago, after an unexpected bonus and much deliberation, I finally took the plunge and bought my own bottom-end MP3 controller - a Reloop Digital Jockey 2 running with Traktor LE.
The plunge coincided with a mixtape I'd been working on for our mates' Beards and Vikings houseparty a couple of weeks ago. It starts off with some party breaks and moves through some fat-electro into more progressive house. Enjoy!

Radio Ra: Musical Mana Podcast - Fail #1
Inspired by our posts on this blog and our shared love of the artists and music we feature on it, Peachi and I are trying to get a podcast off the ground under the monicker of Radio Ra.
So far we've only managed a few sketchy pilots as we attempt to get our heads round the technical side of things. The first attempts at a joint podcast took place in Nottingham a few months ago, but were hampered by technical issues and far too much alcohol.
Since then Peachi's had a go at a some more sober solo shows and I recorded my first attempt at a pilot using my spanking new Reloop Digital Jockey 2 mp3 controller last night. I've only used the kit a few times so far so there are a few glitches, in particular a rather obvious technical fail at the end - *must* remember to plug laptop in next time - but mainly there's a whole bunch of fat bass heavy tunes that rock my world right now. Enjoy!

InSpiral Lounge: Dreadzone Sound System, Ade Laugee and DJ Ade
Had a brilliant party at the InSpiral Lounge in Camden last Saturday night, as the final leg of Danielle's birthday weekend. When we arrived Ade Laugee (Planet Angel) was rocking the canalside cafe with funky goodtime breaks, the perfect warm-up for Dreadzone Sound System. He handed out this wicked little promo at the end.
Ade Laugee - Kumina EDM (YouSendIt link - valid until 27 March)
Dreadzone are one of my all time favourite bands and every time I see them turns out to be a special occasion. Greg Dread and MC Spee were on fine form as always, and had the whole of the tiny cafe bouncing to the ceiling with dubwise energy. It was so frantic that condensation was forming on the ceiling of the tiny cafe and dripping down onto the decks.
I always forget how much fun Dreadzone are, and found myself dancing more than I have in ages. They finished with a new tune in an east end gansta ska style, from their new album Eye on the Horizon which is coming out on 24 April supported by a full live tour. Greg Dread told me after that on the DJ front he's been playing a lot of electro and dubstep lately - sounds like something I'd like to hear!

Up after Dreadzone was my mate Ade (Om Bongo), invited to play one of his epic progressive techno sets. He really kept the engergy in the room going, despite the change in style and by the time I left was blasting out Dirty Loud to a busy room. I posted this wicked mix from Ade in December and he's just released a new mix, Revenge of the Techno Hippies on Soundcloud!

Jungo Road: Undecided, Raydeus, Fort Knox Five and Robosapiens
What with all the flat hunting, working and partying lately, I haven't found much time to blog. I do now have an iPhone though, so that might all change! Here's the first attempt:
One of the things that's been keeping me going through January is the brilliant Jungo Road podcast. These boys, Chad North and Dale Purrough, now joined by Raydeus, select the finest fidget, glitch, tech funk, breaks and techno from both sides of the pond and deliver it straight to your mp3 player. You can't ask for more than that really...
Here's a few of my favourites from the end of last year:

Breakz R Boss Records: Mr. Bassline Junk-E
My mate Len's recently come back over from Canada for a short stay in the UK. He went out there to follow a girl who promptly dumped him... what a bitch! He's still enjoying life in Calgary though....
Something slightly more positive to come out of Canada lately is this free web EP from a new label, Breakz R Boss Records. The original contains a sample from the 1974 hit single "Dreamer " by Supertramp's, which to be honest I find pretty pretty annoying, but the underlying tunes are phat. I particularly recommend Proton and Grateful's funky electro breaks remix, which doesn't have the awful singing on it. They're apparently from Russia, which I'd never known before for it's breaks music, so I'll be looking those two up now for sure!

Mr. Bassline Junk-E - Dreamer (N.Filtr8 Remix)
Mr. Bassline Junk-E - Dreamer (Dj Chaos Remix)

Annoying twats get dubstep makeover:
BREAKZ R BOSS RECORDS is a New Digital Label from Western Canada, owned and operated by Bass Charger and the Breakz R Boss Crew. Their 1st release will be out in February 2010 which is a Dj Somsay original with Remixes by Breakz R Boss artist Dreamthief & Mr. Bassline Junk-E. This should be followed by Tech, Tearout, Funky, & Electro Breakz, Bassline, Fidget & Electro 4x4 styles, DubStep & DNB.
Sounds like my kinda label - good luck to ya boys!

The Do Lab presents: Lucent L’amour (LA)
Shilo from DANCEFEVER5000 recently sent me this info about Lucent L’amour, a Valentine's Day music and art festival on February 13 at the Shrine Expo Hall in downtown LA. It looks sick so I've offered to post here since so many hits seem to come from stateside and I'm jealous...
Here is the quick rundown:
* 100+ artists, musicians, performers and art installations
* Two stages of music and dancing with live and electronic acts
* Live mural and digital painting, art gallery and silent auction
* Romantic, colorful and whimsical décor all throughout venue
* Aerialists, acrobats, burlesque dancers and other live performers
* Unique arts and crafts vendors, full bars & delicious food
* Downtown LA location in historic venue, plenty of parking
* 7PM-4AM, 18+ event, VIP passes available presale
MUSIC: The festival is presented by The Do LaB, one of the premier Burner tribes in Los Angeles, known for throwing fat parties with eclectic lineups and colossal bass. This year’s Lucent L’amour festival has two stages and a keen selection of beautiful beats on the lineup. Both big names and critically acclaimed artists will provide a rousing night of fresh beats for the crowd: Bassnectar, N.A.S.A, Stanton Warriors, Yard Dogs Road Show, Lucent Dossier Experience, Beats Antique, Lazer Sword, Lynx & Janover and Patricio.
ART: Visual arts go hand in hand with music at Lucent L’amour, and you will find a stimulating feast for your eyes all throughout the festival. In addition to a huge art gallery curated by Mike Russek and Deborah Vogt featuring the work of dozens and dozens of artists, we will have a live mural painting by The Mac and Retna as well as a silent art auction, with proceeds going towards the purchase of music and art supplies for under-funded schools. Capping it off is the avant-garde electroart of Andrew Jones, whose inspired creations resonate with the West Coast electronic music community like beats rolling out of a bass bin.
SELF-EXPRESSION: Lucent L’amour promises to create a collision of music, art and creative self-expression. The festival is not a series of performances or a show, but rather an interactive art event where everyone becomes part of the experience, immersed together in one fantastic night of revelry. Come as you are, or deck yourself out in colorful and romantic attire: petticoats, corsets, zoot suits, ruffled parasols, purple polka dot knickers, feathered top hats, green corduroys, striped stockings, and sequined boots- or all of the above.
ROMANCE & MORE: In addition to the music and visual art offerings, Lucent L’amour will dish out a sexy serving of playful dĂ©cor from the fun to the freaky, captivating theatrical performances, unusual craft vendors, hot munchies and full bar service for those 21+ (event is 18+). VIP passes and tickets are available here, and check the Lucent L’amour website for more videos, photos, music from our featured artists and weekly ticket giveaways.

Bassnectar: 2010 IDJ mixtape

Mashing up breaks, d'n'b, reggae, dubstep and glitch-hop in his own genre and tempo defying style, Bassnectar rules. I have very little else to say on the matter except that you NEED this mixtape like you need bass to breath...
I'll leave the rest to the man himself:
Welcome to another Bassnectar Transmission.
This episode is 44 minutes and 25 seconds of 10th-generation genre-re-wiring, exploring bass music through an open-minded lens, regardless of tempo, or even beat-structure… this sound clash aims straight for your body, with the intent to melt you down into a fidgeting, wobbling mess of enthusiasm and delight. In addition to some of my favorite old records and samples, this mix features several brand new Bassnectar tracks, heaps of exclusive edits, re-edits, and re-re-re-edits. Lot’s of re. Lot’s of mix. Lot’s of edits. We tore our favorite drum & bass to shreds, injected hip hop with some pogo-stick bass, amped up the tempo of dubstep, freaked out the gypsies, gave a nod to the dreamy 80’s and ended up similar to where we started off: omni-tempo maximalism strikes again.
Enjoy the ride.

Xmas in Oz: NAPT and Elite Force on Triple J

So while we're looking out the window stuffing ourselves with leftover turkey and getting ready for New Year, a dream team of UK producers are going to be rocking it down-under. Just checkout the lineup above.
The Aussies have great taste in dance music and to celebrate the occasion Australia's Triple J radio have comissioned exclusve mixes from NAPT and Elite Force. Both acts have been responsible for some of my favourite tracks this year and will be well worth keeping an eye out for in 2010!

Euro-burners: London Decompression 2009

Having experienced Burning Man vicariously this year, through my girl D and our other friends that went out, on Saturday I joined them at the London Decompression party – a re-union for UK based burners to reconnect and reminisce over the seven days at Black Rock City, run by a group of playa vetrans Euro-burners .
Like Burning Man itself, it’s all about participation - all the performers, DJs and crew are volunteers who have bought tickets - so ahead of the event I sent a dubstep and glitch-hop demo over to Justin aka VJ Meno who was curating the sound and visuals for the night. I didn't expect to be selected, so it was a nice surprise when I checked my emails on Thursday to find out I was on first... followed by a mild panic.

The plan was to bring some of that West Coast, playa dust coated, bass flavour to East London and warm up the room with some heavy dubstep, reggae and glitch-hop. In the end my set got cut short due to a late start, but you can listen to it here in it's entirety:

Also playing on the night was Jurassik (Ben Child - above) who runs London breaks night and record label Supatronix and the awesome resource that is ThisIsBreaks.com. He was really enjoying himself, pumping the dancefloor with funky party breaks and, when we met later on, he turned out to be a really nice guy as well. You can check out the mix below and have a listen to his own tunes on Soundloud.

Toby Lyons was up after Ben. A bit of a wizard at the controls, he was mashing up some bad boy electro and breaks before pulling out into party style d’n’b, much to the joy of the crowd. Have a look at Toby's Myspace for mini-mixes.
I've reviewed the whole night for Spoonfed.co.uk - you can read the full write up here. Much love to my surrogate burning crew (below - me looking like a twat in the middle)!
