The Badical - wonky acid electro techno mind dingers

Peachi here:

So we heard the two guys that are The Badical at Nowhere Festival recently and they rocked the geodesic dome. I definitely need to be in the right state of mind to appreciate this. But at Nowhere I was and there live set and DJ set were both excellent and we danced our little socks of for what seemed like ages. I think I invented a whole new way of dancing at the time, but can't remember any of it - except that it was one of the best dances I've ever had! I'm just glad there's no recorded evidence! One to watch out for at the upcoming Secret Garden Party 22-25th July 2010...

You can hear their latest stuff on their myspace page and buy their music...

..... or go here and donwload some of their previous mixes!

This sums it up quite well:
"Bent squares and bogus triangles buzz, bip, and boom through statically charged soundscapes -- cleverly crafted fun-sized techno-dramas oozing with pulsating-power & mind-bending mischief." Urban D / Urban D Radio

and so does this picture (love it!):

Smarter than the average bear - Mary Miss Fairy

Peachi here: Well here it is - after a little wait and some last minute technical issues - we finally have the latest MMF mix - Smarter than the Average Bear.

Smarter than the average bear by MaryMissFairy

No longer an anticipation, but now an actually astounding amalgamation of aural altercations - this is a journey into some of the most filthy driving electro sounds you'll find this side of Pooh Corner. Make sure you download it fast while you still can!! Yes unbelievably its FREE!

This mix reminds me alot of 'Wonk This Way' (my other favourite MMF mix) but is definately much MUCH phatter in alot of places! Similar progression from more minimalist stuff to a rocking Dirty Disco Filth section in the middle, with some real mind melters making mince meat of your mind at the end! So heavy are the tracks towards the end and I have to admit I was a bit scared (luckily I'd eaten my hedonistic-porridge this morning so I was OK) ;)

Actually towards the end of the mix it reminded me of her set at Matter earlier in the year, which at the time was right on the edge of my 'heavy-techno' radar. But since then my tastes have changed to appreciate this flavour much more... I think it comes across better on headphones also! Its also much less playful on the dance floor than the more dirty disco tracks. But then its also great to hear the heavy bass with your whole body at a club on massif speakers.... so it seems there are many different ways and moods to access this mix in! So my advice is to keep coming back to it and different tracks will stand out at different times. This is a sign of a good mix in my books (but thats just my humble opinion - but I'm usually right (in my mind!)).

Here's a 'random' picture I selected of Mary on her obviously-a-less-than-smart bear skin rug, thinking about her new set list (probably!). Shame really, if she made a bit of effort she could actually look all right ;)

Top mix Mary, thanks so much for persevering through the technical issues. It Roxs so much - I have no soxs left! RRRAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa!

Mana & Manarangi

This one is about the meaning of Mana and not a music post. It was inspired by doing a balloon model today at a gig and finding out the child's name was Mana, which C-Ra and I recently found out was quite a good (cough deliberate cough) mispelling of 'Manna':

Mana - 1. A supernatural force believed to dwell in a person or sacred object.
2. Power; authority.

Wikipedia - Mana - In contemporary New Zealand English, the word Mana, taken from the Maori, refers to a person or organization of people of great personal prestige and character

So it turns out the kids name was actually short for "Manarangi" - which means something like ruler or ultimate god of power/energy.... but I can't find a clear definition of this online. It may be more from the Cook Islands the father said to me (I think).... ?

I was hopeing the guys who I made the balloon for (or anyone else really) might visit this blog and leave a comment to explain. We had quite a good conversation about it and they said they might look up this blog..... so we'll see ;)

I'm glad they wrote it down for me ir I'd never have remembered it. Mana-Ra to you all ;)

Digital Sensation UK - Fletric - free guest mix

Peachi here: Been listening to this free mix all weekend by Fletric presented by Digital Sensation UK. It's downloadable free at the 'This is Breaks' website. Just scroll to the bottom of the page and hit download. Two free tracks on there too.... but the mix is where its at for me. Oddly enough sounds much better on headphones than on speakers. I think its because there is alot of head noises on there that benefit from a fuller immersion in the stereo sound. Crunch, squelch, psy-LAAAZZZER noises and bass-drive... LOVE THAT COMBO!!

Here's the intro from the interview you can find on there too:

"Digital Sensation UK is a newer label on the scene, having been around for just under a year. But they're rapidly gaining attention for two things: beautifully melodic, soundtrack-like breakbeat, and breaking talented new artists. Label head Duane Barry started the label out of a love for progressive breaks and he quickly found out there were plenty of like-minded artists looking for an outlet for their music. Keep reading for a Q&A with the head honcho himself, who threw in not one, but two free tunes and a brand spankin' new mix from label artist Fletric."

Thankyou This is Breaks ;)

Morbidly Obese Midget: Ra Power Mix

For five years now I've been playing around with a crappy old version of Mix Vibes mp3 mixer, inspired by the mixtapes and sets that I love to listen and dance to. Two weeks ago, after an unexpected bonus and much deliberation, I finally took the plunge and bought my own bottom-end MP3 controller - a Reloop Digital Jockey 2 running with Traktor LE.

The plunge coincided with a mixtape I'd been working on for our mates' Beards and Vikings houseparty a couple of weeks ago. It starts off with some party breaks and moves through some fat-electro into more progressive house. Enjoy!

FatPimp - hairy woman mixes

Peachi here: So this entry is a bit more mainstream than usual, but bear with me. Contained in this blog post are three very fine mixes of music of varying styles. Me-mate Alex (aka. Fatpimp - soon 2B a stag) is da master of blending mainstream tunes with the odd comedy blinder which always cheers me up... and who doesn't need that at some point! Save these for fun silly evenings where the mood is light ;)

... sense of humour-Ra is important in music, same as everywhere else innit! Thus'ly I present to thee three lovely mixes as follows:

The Rest is Noise - is the most recent with some unexpected complex electro bits (see 31.30 for brain spaz) in amongst the seemingly mainstream gumf. I've pointed my fave bits out with my comments on SoundCloud. Also watch out for the comedy interludes of Ivor Cutler at 14.45 (a favourite I must say) and 'I am a very stylish girl' (18.15)...

Well Seasoned - is the the next most recent with comedy interludes coutesy of the 'Salmon Dance' (7mins) and 'I like Apples and Oranges' (38mins). Nice HotChip mix in there too...

Revenge of the Long Haired Freaky People - well you get the idea.... but this one is a bit more of a JAZZ style mix... gotta be in the right silly mood for this.... or just on in the background for up-tempo relaxed moozik! (NB: hosted on my soundcloud page for now)

Anyway, enjoy those as a bit of change from the usual BANG BANG BANG!!

Emancipator - Safe in the Steep Cliffs

Peachi here. Well this post comes thanks to a tweet by Dr. Hedflux who put me on to this amasingly chilled and lovely new album by Emancipator called: Safe in the Steep Cliffs. You can listen to the whole album on his website before you decide whether to buy it or not. I suggest you buy it since he sounds like a home grown self produced talent that needs your support and they are both beautiful albums!

Here is the album description from the ABOUT section of his web page: “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” blends new instrumentation and organic samples with the signature Emancipator style of clean production, silky melodies and addictive drums. Dense layers of choirs, horns, American folk instruments such as the banjo and mandolin, violin and some distinct Asian influences make for a playful but refined album built out of intricate tracks listeners can enjoy on as many levels as they want. Dance to it, chill out to it, immerse your mind in it.

Emancipator says: 'Safe In The Steep Cliffs' represents the tightest, most unique, most organic beats I've made in the last three years. This album has a new palette of sounds and samples from around the world, including more original recordings (guitar/violin/mandolin/banjo) and new guest artists including Japanese jazz musician Uyama Hiroto. It's ominous and overgrown, dense and ethereal. And epic. Always epic.

While you're there check out his debut album "Soon It Will Be Cold Enough" that he self-released at the age of 19 in 2006: "it beautifully mixes hip hop beats with guitar feedback and a delicate piano melody,” Rolling Stone says. “You can feel his energy when he performs. His face lights up and you can see how much he enjoys the music.”

His debut album contains my favourite two tracks of his. Both quite different:
1) 'When I Go' for its beautiful vocals and 2) 'Good Knight' for its lovely blobby and crunchy yet chilled bassline
...but its all good for those super chilled mornings or afternoons ;)
Listen, enjoy and then buy!
